Distinguished and Famous people from Rosebud
🖌️ Arthur Boyd
Arthur Boyd spent three years living with his grandfather at Rosebud from 1936, painting landscapes and family portraits under his guidance. The modest cottage became a place of learning after his brief formal art-school attendance. He held his first solo exhibition while living there in 1937 and later remembered those years with particular affection. The coast offered working subjects as well as a family refuge, helping an emerging painter develop an expressive approach. Rosebud’s place in his career is therefore substantial: it was a home, an informal studio school and the setting for an early public step into professional art.
🎨 Arthur Merric Boyd
Arthur Merric Boyd lived at Rosebud after the death of his wife, fellow artist Emma Minnie, in 1936. His grandson Arthur joined him there and received painting lessons. The older Boyd had painted landscapes and watercolours over a long career that included exhibiting in London and Melbourne. His children included potter Merric, painter Penleigh and novelist Martin, making art and literature familiar family occupations. At Rosebud, knowledge passed between generations through working together. The seaside home became a place where an established artist helped a teenage grandson develop the skills and confidence to pursue painting himself.
